Sirhowy Valley Walks.

Distance for full circuit approx 19 miles,

Linear walk to Holly bush, return by buss: approx 7 miles.

Manmoel circuit approx 8 miles. 

These Walks use the eastern ridge of the Sirhowy Valley, which is part of a long distance route between Tredegar and Newport.

There are many route options this, describes the simplest of the many options within the valley.

 

Take road down beside Motor World to the bottom, through passage under bypass road. Passed post office on your right From Hobo hand side, continue up Gorge town hill to the top. Around bends on last bend take track on right hand side, which leads into the forestry. Under overhead cables the track splits,

Left: leads to forest road turn right and follow for approx half mile then left onto rough road. 

Right: down through the felled forest for approx half mile to join road opposite St James reservoir.

Right onto road to join unmade road along the ridge, which is the Sirhowy Valley path. If your feeling energetic continue to the top, other wise continue along road for 3 miles. On right hand side follow old stone wall to forest gate, through gate onto forest road until cross tracks. 

At cross tracks, either:

Left: take's you to up Manmoel village, through village, continue following road to return to Tredegar.   

Right: down to farm at the valley bottom and onto main A4080 road back to Tredegar.

Straight ahead: down track, first right beside fence, cross small foot bridge leads to small village of Holly bush. (Nice pub there) On main road there is a bus stop (Bus No 56 to Tredegar). 

Or follow track down to Markham colliery site, track joins obvious disused railway line. Cross river bridge and continue down on disused rail line to Argoed. On main road there is a bus stop (Bus No 56 to Tredegar).

Or
Cross road and continue up the hill to Bedwellty church. There's a number of pubs there, some nights there are dog races on the track in the church pub. Turn right and follow road into Markham, where you can catch the No 56 bus to Tredegar.

Or

Continue straight ahead at mini round about passed police house and water tower onto open land, take road first right, both sides of road have dry stone walls. At end of wall over cattle grid back onto open area.

Either follow road back to Tredegar,

Or

Follow wall round on right roughly in line with ridge line then follow tracks along ridge way. On descent to road before cattle grid take path on right between fields, down to the Rugby Club grounds.
